  • Margaret Busby

"Pichón is a rare kind of book: a remarkable true story that is at once “a good read”, engaging and unpredictable as the best fiction, and at the same time a compelling first-hand account of some of the most pivotal moments of twentieth-century politics. Carlos Moore, a now well known black Cuban ethnologist and activist, writes with absolute honesty, humor and often startling intimacy about the personal, social and historical episodes that have shaped him and taken him on an almost incredible life journey. Dealing with universal questions of identity and belonging in a way that is constantly uplifting..."

The Book Project

  • Alex Haley
Best-selling writer, author of Roots  (died in 1992)

"This morning I finished reading, for the third time, your book proposal on Pichón: Growing Up With the Revolution . (.... ) There is no way that this book, in your hands, will not become a major addition to the literature about modern Cuba." (Letter to the author, August 22, 1990).

"Your Pichón book proposal arrived in the mail today, and I am busy to my earlobes ... and I began reading ... and I have not quit until the end of it. Quite frankly, I think you have done a masterful job of presenting this." (Letter to the author, May 24, 1991).

  • Nestor Almendros
    World-acclaimed cinematographer  (died in 1992).

"As promised in our last phone conversation, I am reacting promptly to your Pichón 'Book Proposal.' ....  First of all, I agree with Alex Haley and the others, that the work you are preparing is unique." (Letter to the author, September 15, 1991).

  • Antonio Benitez-Rojo
Celebrated Cuban writer, author of The Repeating Island (died in 2005)

"I read the book proposal. From a strictly narrative standpoint, your life seems to me to be most interesting, perhaps singular, or, even better, 'unique.' From the human standpoint, it is something else, too complex to be defined, mixing poverty, discrimination, 'Black Radicalism', Castroite dictatorship, repression, love, intellectual upliftment, and, lastly, family peace and that sort of serene skepticism that those who have lived  intensely manage to attain at the end."  (Letter to the author, March 21, 2004. Translation).

They call it a “remarkable memoir.” The complete review follows:

Moore, Carlos. Pichon: Race and Revolution in Castro’s Cuba. Lawrence Hill: Chicago Review. Nov. 2008. 400p. photogs. index. ISBN 978-1-55652-767-8. $26.95. AUTOBIOG
Verdict: Moore’s remarkable memoir of growing up black in Cuba is marred by his impulses to exaggerate and a penchant of portraying himself as standing alone against racism. Book selectors need to examine the author’s agenda, but this small book provides a useful critique of Castro’s Cuba.
Background: Moore (Castro, the Blacks, and Africa) recounts growing up as black, labeled as a pichon (the Cuban equivalent of the notorious N word), and surviving the racism of Cuban society. Moore left Cuba at the zenith of the Batista-Castro struggle only to return voluntarily as a revolutionary in the summer of 1961. After two years of discrimination, he departed Cuba once again, not to return for 36 years.—Boyd Childress, Auburn Univ. Lib., AL
